Hello and welcome back to The Extravagant! For this week, I decided to choose three sports/activity-inspired styles and break it down. It's really cool how the clothing worn when you do an activity can inspire a whole subgenre in fashion.
Style #1: The Tennis Player
The very first aesthetic we'll be talking about is the preppy tennis aesthetic. This has been blowing up lately, and it inspired me to make this post.
Some clothing essentials are:
Tennis skirts (duh) - I have one I got from UO in plaid.
Skorts - Skorts are great if you want a more practical skirt.
Crew socks - You probably already own one of these, and you can get huge packs for super cheap.
Tennis shoes - These shoes have been super trendy and sneakers are an essential.
Polos - I personally won't be investing in a polo because I have this thing against buttons (if you know, you know) but you might consider one.
Athletic shorts - I have these shorts I got from playing rec soccer, and they can pretty much be used in a sport style.
Ribbed tank tops - If you aren't a fan of polos, ribbed tank tops can be your go-to.
Hats - Specifically visors.
Tennis dresses - Pretty self explanatory.
Sweater vests - Sweater vests are for the more preppy side of the look.
Some important elements are:
Colors - The tennis aesthetic usually deals with lighter colors and pastels like baby blue, white, and light beige.
Patterns - It is usually very light on patterns, most commonly using plaid or stripe details.
Prints - Big and bold prints are uncommon in this style; people tend to go for small logo details.
I found this article that may be helpful.
And P.S: I have a Pinterest board (go follow me @The Extravagant) called Really random aesthetics. It has some ultra specific micro-styles, and one of them is tennis. So if you want more inspiration, stay tuned!
Style #2: The Dancer
The dancer is a relatively new aesthetic, so it's hard to really get a good look. I would suggest this article all about it. Here are some key points:
Wrap tops - I've personally been loving wrap dresses, skirts, and tops.
Leggings - The fashion community has been wearing leggings as fashion for a long time now.
Headbands - Similarly to tennis, the dancer also wears those stretchy headbands.
Shrugs - Shrugs are back and better than ever.
Work out sets - Everything athletic can now be used for style as well, but I know it's not a universal thing.
Ballet flats - The OGs
Ballet skirts - Try to look for satin or silk ones with a bias hem to get the trendy, flowy, silhouette.
Long sleeve crop tops - I actually have one of these, and I can confirm that they do give off that dancer impression.
Unitards - In true dancer fashion, the list would not be comeplete without an unitard.
Tights - It's key that you get white or skin-colored ones, not black.
Joggers - It's sort of for the pre/post workout look.
It isn't a very well-defined aesthetic, so just play around and have fun!
Style #3: The Skater Girl
You have probably heard of the "skater girl". They're edgy, bold, and own a skateboard. Here are some common pieces I found while looking at the skater girl aesthetic:
Ripped, baggy jeans - These should be pretty easy to find, considering their popularity for the last couple years.
Flannels - I have a personal vendetta against flannels, but they look cute on others.
Cool sunglasses - I absolutely adore those cool sunglasses, but sadly I already have glasses.
Sweatshirts/pants - Long story short, every sport includes sweats.
Sneakers - Any type of sneaker would look good. I've seen Converse, Vans, Nikes, and (the infamous) Fila Disruptors.
Beanies - Again, I just have something against beanies, but it should be on the list.
Cargo pants - An alternative to jeans or sweats would be baggy cargo/utility pants.
Turtlenecks - It's an essential, whether you partake in the skater girl look or not.
Fitted crop tops - These ribbed or baby tee tops have been everywhere recently.
Graphic tees - A good graphic tee can make an entire outfit.
Basically any mixture of tight and baggy clothes
Some important elements are:
Colors- Dark or vibrant colors
Patterns - Plaid, tie-dye
Prints - Thrasher, cars, anything big, bright, bold, and vintage
