Hello and welcome back to The Extravagant! Today we are reviewing how accurate Pinterest's predictions for 2022 trends were. I'll only be talking about the fashion and beauty trends.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, Pinterest Predicts is a report, coming out at the end of every year. They forecast trends in fashion, beauty, home decor, etc. based on searches from the year. It's a tool mainly used by creators to appeal to their audience and be updated. All images in this post, with the exception of the one above, are from Pinterest. So, let's get started!
Dopamine Dressing is all about wearing bright and unexpected colors to give your mood a boost. Some of these colors were bubblegum pink, cobalt blue, saffron, and cerulean. I actually talked about these in my spring color trends post, so it definitely came true. Dressing brightly never went out of style, but people naturally gravitated towards brighter colors to get ready for the "new normal".
Funny how this turned out, with the whole Wednesday craze. They originally meant it to be interpreted in a cybergoth-mall-goth-anime way. From Steal The Spotlight's NANA outfits, to 90's whimsigoth, to the rockstar's gf, and ending with headphones as an accessory, it worked out. I can say we'll be seeing more of this in 2023 without a doubt.
Euphoria, anybody? With the release of season 2 this year, it was a trend just itching to happen. Tooth jewels, rhinestones-embellished eyes, and clusters of sparkles on acrylic nails were all things Pinterest predicted. This was taken a step further with crystal netting, beaded items, and semi-sheer sparkling tops. It's a fun and affordable trend to participate in.
Pearls have been trending for the past couple of years now. Pearl purses, nails, barrettes, gloves, coquette jewelry, avant garde pearls, and anything that looks like it came from an underwater palace falls under this category. It's usually translated into coquette/angelcore, but I like adding some of my handmade pearl jewelry to an edgier outfit for that juxtaposition. This came true, for sure.
A "Rebel Cut" is any hairdo that grabs your attention. We're looking at mullets, shags, bobs, buzz cuts, etc. in bright hues. They put a big emphasis on buzzes with neon graphics. This is the first trend that didn't live up to the hype. The style reached its peak in 2021, and was less popular this year. As for the mullet and shag, it was quickly overpowered by their softer counterpart, the wolf cut. Overall, Rebel Cuts didn't hold up.
Check Yourself is exactly what the name says: checkerboard patterns. I saw it everywhere. Sweater vests, skirts, tank tops, phone cases, wallpapers, floor tiles, rugs, blankets, and so much more. It rose very fast, and decreased in popularity by September. However, Wednesday's love for checks certainly played a part in the (mini) revival of checkers. It was already a trend in 2021, so I can't give Pinterest much credit.
Think The Song Of Achilles, white statues in your living room, and "what Aphrodite would wear in 2022". In fashion, common elements include draped chiffon, gold lame, laurel motifs, and curly up-dos. The Hellenistic Revival was there, but wasn't a top trend for 2022 like they predicted. It probably did better in the interior design space than fashion. But I will always love anything that reminds me of Percy Jackson.
Technically, this isn't even a fashion trend, but I'm including it anyways. Black-and-white outfits, sheer fabrics beaded with stars and moons, sequins, and messy glitter makeup is what comes up when you search up "celestial fashion". What also pops into my head is the music video for Levitating by Dua Lipa, released 2 years prior. So, this one didn't really hit the mark.
The main idea of Nailscapes is to paint landscape-like designs on your nails. This includes deserts, aurora borealis, geodes, crystals, and ocean motifs. This was a cool concept, but never became a thing. It was too broad of a topic. I saw some parts of it, like pearl-coated nails and water marbling, but it wasn't a trend.
That's it for today! I know I haven't been doing blogmas as much as I was supposed to, and this will probably be the last post before Christmas. However, make sure to check out my Pinterest and Instagram accounts (linked below) for more content. Have a festive Christmas. See you (maybe) next year!
