Hello and welcome back to The Extravagant! Today I'm doing something I've been seeing a lot recently, which is people sharing their opinions on 2022 trends! If you recall, back in ye old days, I did A LOT of these types of trend predictions/observations. Later, I realized that I was not contributing anything to the world with this information, as someone could do a quick google search and find everything in my posts. So this time, I'm doing the same exact thing with my opinions!
Note: do not take anything I say seriously. Wear what you want! It was an eye opening experience when I realized, for the first time, that I can wear whatever I want! Literally no one cares, and if they do, that's on them. I know it doesn't seem really convincing now, but trust me, it's true. I'm planning on doing an email course on confidence and the ability to wear what you want, so comment down below if you would like to see that. To reiterate, WEAR WHAT YOU WANT!!! Now, onto the trends.
opera gloves
Starting out strong we have opera gloves! I love this trend because it feels so glassy and elegant. I'm actually feeling all types of gloves lately, ranging from The Emo fingerless gloves to Bell Sleeved Faerie. I think some other styles will stick around, but sadly, not the opera gloves. They're pretty, but seem to be a winter-only thing.
feathers
Unpopular opinion: I actually don't like feathers. They seem a very party-centered trend, that will probably fade when summer rolls around. I'd much rather go for a fur lining instead of this.
catsuits
Catsuits, leotards, bodysuits, one pieces, onesies, call them whatever you want. I've seen celebrities go to events in them, and I can appreciate them that way. But I think they will stay in the athleisure category, long-term. Some versions are really cool, but many people would feel very exposed wearing one.
low rise
There's no point trying to fight it at this point. I have a pair of them myself, but I still do not get how to wear them for winter. I might do a post on it once I have it figured out. But back to the trend! I don't think it will be super long lasting, because of the fierce hate that many people lave for them. As soon as they find something cooler, it will be out. I definitely prefer high rise, but I'm open to experimentation.
chunky scarves
I'd classify this more of a micro trend, because it can only be donned in the winter. I have never been a huge fan of being swaddled in so much fabric I would combust as soon as something embarrassing happened, but oh well I guess. It's not the worst.
waistcoats
When I first saw this on my daily WhoWhatWear scour several months ago, my first reaction was "ewwwwwww!" I think it's my reaction to all types of vests (fun fact: I actually used to hate sweater vests). But, as many things do, it's growing on me. The formal, tailored version does look cool, but if I were to wear it, I would go the faerie-grunge-schoolgirl way. I think this trend will last a long time!
ties
I didn't see this coming, but I'm not that surprised. With more menswear styles like masculine tailoring, blazers, slacks, loafers, and waistcoats, ties were just around the corner. I think they look really cool and will last a long time, due to obvious reasons. However, I would trade it in more layered long necklaces, silk scarves, or a skinny scarf.
goth
Just to make it clear, goth is very different from the trendy goth. I think people mean the more Olivia Rodrigo, The Craft, "grunge", Avril Lavigne, and of course, the iconic cartoon goth girls (Darcy, Marceline, Shego, Blackfire, etc.). So, pop-punk. Now, no offense to any of the previously mentioned, they are iconic and I admire their fashion sense. That being said, this time around I think we will take a more gothic academia style, which will merge with dark academia. Or, just more red plaid and black lace.
drapery and maxi skirts
This is a trend that I'm actually really excited for. Pinterest Predicts said that there will be a Hellenistic revival (as a long time Percy Jackson fan, this is right up my alley), and I think this is a part of it. Draped clothing looks surreal on the runway, like something out of another world. However, on the street, I think it will be more toned down. Pleats, cowl neck, tie-details, asymmetrical cutouts, sheer fabric, and maxi skirts will be the way to go. I think it will reach it's height in the spring and summer, but probably fade in the colder months.
knee highs
Right now, we're trading out the Ariana Grande thigh high boots with a more relaxed knee high. I've been seeing really cool platform shoes, but I'll be going with some socks. This is a very versatile trend, so it might last until 2023 (hopefully)!
pearls
Not really a shocker, but I think it's still worth mentioning. It might seem like the pearl "trend" has peaked, but I don't think so. Instead, they'll be coming back in a different form. Unconventional pearls like irregular shapes and colors will be found in almost any type of jewelry. And I have reason to believe that they'll be staying a while.
organza
The only reason I know about the existence of organza is because it is used to make the prettiest Selkie dresses. Occasionally, I go to their site just to ogle at the dresses. I'm not sure if I'll be investing, but I know it will stay a while.
futuristic
Futuristic fashion is back and better than ever, There's a class on Coursera from MoMA that mentions a brand that makes custom 3-D printed dresses (it's so cool!). If you aren't ready to get a 3-D printed version of your wardrobe, no worries! I'm loving the deconstructed look, which still gives off the vibe. Detached sleeves and pant legs, metallic, chains, bright colors, reflective surfaces, fringe and more are all in so release your dystopian apocalypse!
naked fashion
"Naked" fashion is basically how to wear the least amount of fabric as possible, while still be fashionable. Mini skirts, cutouts, sheer fabric, low rise, and string and tie details. I don't think this will be a particularly long lasting one, because the majority of the public won't be confident in it. Plus, I've seen looks from the 2000's that are similar, and were often made fun of.
extreme layering
Last but not least, we have the polar opposite! I like layering, a lot. I've layered three tops on top of each other and it worked out fine. However, extreme winter layering is a different story. I don't think that will last long, but the subversive basics trend will stay.
That's it for today! I hope you liked this format, comment down below if you would like me to do more of these in the future. I'm pretty sure next week will be the second and last part of the bullet journal flip through, but don't quote me on that. See you next week!
This video by ModernGurlz on Youtube made me excited about fashion again, so I thought you guys should be able to see it too:
