Fads, trends, and classics

With the new year inching closer comes all the new fashion trends. Crazy colors, playful patterns, and stunning silhouettes are all over magazines and websites. And as much as you might want to run out the door and shop, you also want to spend your hard earned money wisely. So, it might be helpful if you knew the terms fads, trends, and classics.

Classics

Classics pieces that will never go out of style. The idea would stay the same, but some details may change. We'll discuss more about that in the trends section, so hang tight! You always want your wardrobe to have plenty of classics as they all look good together. When you're in a rush, you can grab a couple pieces and automatically look great without any effort.

Some classic pieces are:

Tees, shirts, jeans, leather and denim jackets, black boots, white sneakers, etc.

Fads

You may not be very familiar with fads. Fads are certain trends that go out of style very quickly. The word "fad" is an acronym that stands for "For a day." You can invest in a fad once in a while, but your whole closet shouldn't be made out of them. They can be hard to create outfits out of, as they're usually loud and bright. They're great for spicing up a boring outfit and add some trendy flair. But, since they will go out of style in the next couple of seasons, you shouldn't spend too much money on them. Make sure the item has a good price-to-wear ratio. If you don't want to spend money on fads, invest in trends and classics. If you ever miss a fad, don't worry. A new one will come soon.

Some fads in the 2010's were:

Jeggings, flower crowns, skater skirts, llamas, pineapple, and galaxy prints, and cold shoulder sleeves.

Trends

Many people confuse trends and fads. They might be similar in some ways, but there is one clear difference. Fads could stay from 2 weeks to several seasons. Trends eventually go out of style, but they stick around for a long time, maybe even a decade! Earlier I mentioned that the details of classic pieces will change. Take jeans for example. The idea is always the same but the style of them is constantly evolving. In the 60's and 70's, bootcut and bell-bottomed jeans were all the rage. They were replaced with cuffed ones in the 80's and baggier ones in the 90's. When the 2000's rolled around, ultra low rise did too and in the 2010's, everyone was sporting skinny jeans. And now, in 2020, high waisted mom jeans are the new big thing. These details become trends. I like investing in trends because you will still be fashionable for a long time.

Some fall 2020 trends are:

Sweater vests, cardigans, mom jeans, brown, the preppy vibe, etc.
