READER slowly makes their way into the dark mansion. They reach a slightly ajar door and push it open. A black silhouette sitting on spinny chair turns to face them
WRITER (black silhouette)
"Well, well, well. Look who it is. Another person disappointed in the Met Gala."
READER stays silent.
WRITER
*Harshly* "Now, what do you want. Why are you here?"
READER
"...I want to know..."
WRITER
*Under her breath* "Here we go again."
READER
"Was the Met Gala always this bad? Was it always like this."
Reader gestures to their phone, showing a Getty image of SEBASTION STAN in Valentino titled Gilded Glamour.
WRITER sighs and leans back in the spinny office chair, almost falling backwards but managing to save herself at the last second, returning back to her mysterious demeanor.
WRITER
If you really must know, then no. It wasn't always this bad. Everything started going downhill after 2018's Heavenly Bodies.
POWER suddenly goes out, leaving READER in pitch-black darkness. They hear WRITER cackling maniacally, and slowly backs out of the room.
WRITER
"But if you really want to know, then why don't you see for yourself! Mwahahahahahahaha!"
Anna Wintour
I honestly have no idea why the literal guest-list maker isn't following the dress code. It's almost like she's lost hope. Anyways, there's nothing to say about this look. It doesn't follow the dress code, and is pretty boring. She's worn variations of this like, a thousand different times before.
Addison Rae
Everyone has been hating on Addison, for no apparent reason. Should she be invited to the Met? Probably not. But she doesn't look bad in the sparkly silver dress she's wearing. My only issue is that it doesn't fit the theme and is giving Oscars, not the Met Gala.
Alexa Chung
I actually really like this dress, but it seems more like a prom dress than a Met Gala gown. There is a historical element to it. but it isn't Gilded Age. I definitely saw something very similar on my Pinterest page.
Teyana Taylor
High collar effect? Check. Big sleeves? Check. She's one of the better ones, actually. I like the modern touches of the cutouts and pattern on the fabric, However, I wish it was a heavier fabric or had a bustle for the Gilded Age feel. All in all, not bad.
Kate and Lily Moss
First, Kate. I think this coat-dress looks great on her, but it doesn't remind me of clothing from that era at all. And for Lily, I have no idea what is going on. It doesn't even look luxe. I'll have to research what exactly she's wearing, but for now, this is my review.
Karlie Kloss
Karlie Kloss is wearing a black slip dress with matching lace gloves. It is objectively a very pretty dress, but is giving Old Hollywood more than anything else. I'm not a fan of the hair and the makeup together, even though I try not to focus on hair and makeup since it's not my specialty. Overall, it's not great.
Lily Aldridge
A review I saw (I forgot which one) said that she looks like she's sponsored by I. AM. GIA., and I can't disagree. However, I don't hate it. It's the fabric choice with the dress style for me. The material is a night-out-at-the-disco or something, but the silhouette of the dress is classy and elegant. I don't think they look well together. This could have been so great in an embroidered velvet.
Lucy Boynton
She reminds me of a creepy Victorian doll. Not in a good way.
Gabrielle Union
It's too much. the sparkly dress, red flower, and feather trim. My first thought when I saw this was Macy's the day before Christmas. Just no.
Adwoa Aboah
This is one of the first dresses that I actually really liked. The big sleeves and train make up for my personal bias against polka dots. It reminds me a lot of Nicola's spectacular outfit, which we'll get into towards the end of the post. 10/10!
Brooklyn Beckham
On the other hand, I HATE THIS!!! Valentino has been force-feeding this hot pink nonsense down our throats since the collection came out. I've seen it a million times over, and I've begun to associate the color with Valentino itself. It's one of the only brands I can instantly recognize. This rant also covers Sebastian Stan's god-awful outfit, I almost felt bad for him seeing him in that. Valentino needs to calm down.
Amber Valletta
It feels way more art deco than Gilded Age. I don't think celebrities realized that by "gilded glamour" they didn't actually mean gold. It's not terrible, but a year from now we won't remember it at all.
Iris Law
This dress is absolutely stunning. The them? Nonexistent. Iris looks flawless in the dress, but it's just leaves and ombre, nothing that special. I didn't mean to come off as such a stickler for the theme, but it was so easy this year. And people still managed to do some weird, funky stuff.
Olivia Rodrigo
As my sister once said, "Olivia put on those gloves and has not taken them off ever since." This is, without a doubt, her strongest red carpet. It was wasted on a carpet that did not fit her dress code. I will love these sparkly Versache dresses until the day I die, but the event wasn't the right one. Another issue for me is how the opera gloves don't match the dress perfectly. Also, I watched her Get Ready With Me video, and I saw this pearl headdress that was one of her options. In my expert opinion, that would have been a much better choice. I really love this look, but it was for the wrong occasion.
Sydney Sweeney
I love a good transforming moment on the red carpet, but this didn't hit the mark. I actually want to make a separate post about celebrities who have good street style miss the mark for formal events, because she would be one of them. The only historical element seems to be the corset and maybe the crinoline-like skirt once it became shorter. Both versions were pretty bland.
Laura Harrier
This reminded me of Lily Aldridge's dress, but better. Laura at least tried to make it on theme. She's wearing a typical Barbie dress with gloves and pearls. It's not super memorable or on theme, but it gets the job done. ModernGurlz on YouTube said that she's tired of the opera gloves on red carpets, but I think it's fine. It's getting a little boring, but there are so many ways to fit it into your style, it's not like Valentino.
Blake Lively
Blake Lively's look is inspired by the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Station Terminal. If you are a fashion person, you probably already know all the references so I won't get into them. I really like this look, and it's an example of a transformation done right. It isn't my all time favorite look of the night, probably because of the 2010s-esque color palette, but it's one of the better ones.
Billie Eilish
We're going to end this review with Billie Eilish, hands-down the best dresses person at the Met. She's wearing this Gucci dress that's actually on theme, and I love the silhouette. They could of chilled the intense push-up effect, but it looks fine both ways. The entire ensemble was made out of deadstock fabric (fabric that was already created, not made specifically for this dress). I think it gives it a fun, mismatched look that would be lacking otherwise, considering the pastels and traditional style. 10/10, and apparently the only person who could read the theme.
That's it for today! I know this was pretty short and even more late, but it's the end of the school year and I was busy and lazy. I was planning to make a part two of this so I can review some more looks, but it's already pretty irrelevant. I might make a couple more posts before the end of the year, but definitely in summer. Comment down your thoughts on the Met Gala, leave a like, and subscribe. It really helps :) See you soon!
