Hello and welcome back to The Extravagant! It's been a hot minute since I've last posted, but I've been working on a lot of new posts for you guys. For March, Women's History Month, I wanted to do something special. I remembered that I never actually listened to Marina's latest album, Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land. I was listening to all of her songs and finally realizing how great they were when I decided I should review the outfits. So this is the Women's History Month special!
I was going to originally make this a rating and recreation. I think it would be really cool to try to emulate some of her outfits that we'll be discussing, but for time purposes I had to cut out that idea. If you would like to see that in the future, please tell me! I would love to do another outfits post again. I'm pretty sure that my first (and only) one was the winter outfits, so it's been a while.
If you have any suggestions for specific events or themes, be sure to leave them in the comments, my email, or the chat. Everything will be linked below. Please like and subscribe, it would mean a lot to me. So let's get into the ratings.
Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land
The most well-known outfit for the entire outfit it the one she wore on the cover, this blue metallic corset and miniskirt set. This is what I would imagine Bloom from Winx Club to wear in the live action Magic Winx transformation (Fate Should Have Done This! counter: 1). I have been obsessed with this blue color and I want to find something like this! The V-details from her bangs to the skirt are amazing. I would love to try this makeup look once I can get into it. 10/10 for sure!
I'm not sure if she actually wears this in the music video or just in the promo pictures, but I'm including it anyway. She's wearing a relatively simple outfit compared to the last one, a black long-sleeve top with an asymmetric top and a leather mini skirt. These amazing lime green platform heels add a pop of the color the album is consistent with. I'm going to rate this outfit a 7/10 because the green and black isn't well established in the rest of the outfit, so it feels like it was put together last-minute. And if you know me, my style is not even close to effortless. However, I am also obsessed with this metallic lime green, and the shoes are the ones that are bumping it up the extra point. Flora would totally wear them (Fate Should Have Done This! counter: 2).
I'm combining the next two outfits into one because they are so similar. Marina is wearing a white crop top with "Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land" in black cursive. In the first image she has it with metallic electric blue pants, and in the second a simple black miniskirt with cutouts. I'm rating both of these a 6/10. I think they're fine, but we aren't looking for fine. I just want to point out that she was wearing the metallic pant trend before it was the metallic pant trend! On that note, if you would like to see a spring trends post, comment down below. She's the first person I saw that could actually wear low-rise.
This outfit is the same as the first one but in pink. Personally, I like the blue version more. As I mentioned earlier, I'm obsessed with that shade of blue, and I think it looks better on her overall. On the other hand, I love her hair in this picture. The slicked back style looks amazing, and the glitter in her hair gives me major nostalgia. This is a mental note to myself to recreate the hair when I time. The inner corner liner is the only part that I'm not a huge fan of. She has really big, round eyes, and the inner corner looked vaguely unsettling. I am aware that in the music video, there was a dark blue version of this set, but I couldn't find any pictures. But I do love that one too! Both versions will be getting an 8/10.
Man's World
Out of all of the outfits in the Man's World music video, I like this one the least. That being said, it is still a great outfit! I think it works in the context of the video. When she is surrounded by trees and the sunlight, it looks very ethereal. And I'm lot sure how to feel about the Birkenstock-esque shoes she wears. I don't love this shade of pink in the dress, but I love it in the silky hair scarf. I really want to start wearing pink, so making a dress like this would be such a fun sewing project. 6/10.
Behold, the best look in the music video! The color blocking in this one is more minimalistic, and instead it plays around more with cutouts and drapery. If you read my 2022 trends post, you already know that I'm a sucker for some good drapery. It looks so graceful and goddess-like, how can you not love it? This shade of green is one of my new favorite shades. AND THIS CAPE!!! Everything about this is perfection, so 10/10 for me!
It reminds me a lot of Flora's formal dress in Winx, so I thought I should add it here. (Fate Should Have Done This! counter: 3)
I love this dress so much! In some shots the tie thingy around the hips is a light purple and sometimes it's a light blue. Both versions are great. I think it would be so cool to sew something similar, because I would totally wear it in the summer with sneakers or sandals. It's one of the more modest outfits in the album, so I'd love to try it out. The drapery, the color-blocking, it's all too pretty! 9/10!
Purge The Poison
Now onto Purge the Poison, we this sky blue and highlighter yellow swirly-print set. Aesthetic-wise, I hate this so, so much. I like the dress and pants combo, but the colors are too much. Which is funny, because it's the same exact colors that Flora was wearing, but I guess that goes to show how important lighting is. I think I would love this if it was in more muted colors, but that isn't what this album's about. It does fit the aesthetic of the music video, and it kind of reminds me
This is the picture of the dress on the website, but it looks like they're no longer selling it.
The second outfit is my favorite of the song. It's this green sparkly sheer slip dress with "emotional" in hot pink. I want this dress with my entire heart, except maybe the emotional part. But the green, the jewels, it's just too much for me to handle. I put the picture from the website here too, just to show you how it was originally styled with the flame boots. In the case that I miraculously received it one day, I think I would style it with a black base and fun cowboy boots. Anyways, I love this dress so 10/10.
This is the final outfit in the music video. It's a sparkly silver sequined square-necked dress (try saying that ten times fast!). The sequins reflect the light really well in the water and it looks super pretty! I have nothing much really to say about this, so I'll give it a solid 7/10. But on another note, I love the aesthetic of this music video, and ADIAML. The underwater shots, the cuts to random screens, the green lighting with red pops of color, and the frequent cuts. Especially the one part where the lyrics go "you are not my master" and it cuts to this blurry red shot of Marina. That scene lives rent free in my head. There's a reason why it's on my blog banner and my Pinterest profile!
Live From The Desert
On the Live From The Desert poster, she's wearing a denim corset and two-toned jeans. I am obsessed with this look, and I really want to attempt the bleached pants in the future. It is a little simple and doesn't go with the rest of the outfits, so I'll give it an 8/10. I cant totally imagine Musa wearing this (Fate Should Have Done This! counter: 4). And side note: this poster is on my blog banner too, along with an Electra Heart sticker!
This is what Stella from Winx Club would wear, and you can't convince me otherwise. The orange, subtle sparkle, and big sleeves are perfect! (Fate Should Have Done This! counter: 5.) I love the way the harsh sunlight hits the set and automatically draws your eye to it, and the wind in the desert blows the sleeves back. I think this outfit might be the one to convince me to try out ankle-length pants again! I have to give this a 10. In addition to the amazing set, I've been obsessed with this type of eyeshadow. I'm seeing so many people wear it.
This is the alternative look to the orange set. I like the orange one better in terms of color and fit. I'm not the biggest fan of the neon green, but I'm pretty sure it's just the lighting since I like it in the video. Furthermore, I don't like the coat she's wearing with it. It would be more my style without the coat and in a different color, like pink or purple. On a different note, I love the kitten heels she's wearing with a lot of these outfits. I think I prefer it to the chunky platforms she's wearing in the photoshoots and on tour. I'll give this a 7/10.
Venus Flytrap
In the Venus Fly Trap music video, she wears a baby-blue color blocked dress. She carries the sixties vibes throughout the rest of the outfit, kitten heels and flipped up hair. This is probably the most iconic outfit in the music video, and I love the sixties influences. However, the style is not my personal style so I'll have to rate it a 6/10. I don't have much to say about this one.
I COULD NOT find a good picture of this outfit for the life of me, so just know that she's wearing this spectacular yellow coat with a feather trim, a white tee-shirt with Purge the Poison lyrics on it, and dark wash skinny jeans. Her hair and makeup is very reminiscent of the Electra Heart era, and the fifties smoothie is adding to it. I'm not a huge fan of this aesthetic, so I'll have to rate this a 5/10. It's the eyebrows for me.
This is, without doubt, the most wearable outfit of the entire album. She's wearing a tank top, a cropped shirt, jeans, and low top sneakers. We have to note that she's wearing very minimal jewelry and a side part. She is obviously emulating one of her past eras, but I'm not sure which one (I'm a newer listener). I'm rating this a 8/10. I would definitely wear this irl, but in terms of interesting-ness, it doesn't match up to the other ones.
The last outfit is this cool spy leather set, which she wears while blowing up the Hollywood sign. I could not find ANY good quality pictures that showed the entire outfit, so here's what we settled for. I don't have too much to say about this one. It's a cool outfit that reminded me of the old Black Widow costume in Iron Man 2. All in all, a solid 7/10.
That's it for this week! I hope you enjoyed today's post. To sum it up, Marina is a fashion, music, and pop culture icon. I know I haven't been posting regularly, but that will change soon. Next week I think I'll do my annual spring color trends post. If you have any suggestions of anything you want to see from me, then don't be shy to put it in the comments, chat, or email me. Like and subscribe, and spread the word. Love you guys and see you next week, and happy Women's History Month!
