Hello and welcome back to The Extravagant! This week, as promised, I'm introducing 6 South Asian designers that you probably didn't know about. Remember to like and subscribe if you like my blog and stick around until the end. A quick announcement: I've started creating pins for my blog on Pinterest, so you can find my posts there too. My account will be linked at the bottom. You can always contact me from Pinterest, and honestly I'll be more likely to respond if you do. Now, let's get on with it!
Gaurav Gupta
Gaurav Gupta's signature style is draped, sculptural dresses with traditional Indian influences, but make it couture. It has been worn by many celebrities, from Megan Thee Stallion to Cardi B.
abacaxi
The name meaning pineapple in Portuguese, it reflects the tropical, traveling lifestyle. The clothing's main components are it's saturated, interesting textiles, traditional handcrafted techniques, and new takes on indigenous clothing. Out of all of the brands I'll show, this one is my personal favorite.
Supriya Lele
Supriya Lele juxtaposes leathers, black, and boxy silhouettes with sheer, dainty pieces in vibrant colors. The brand mirrors her Indian - British heritage, with traditional drapery and the minimalistic grunge look of the 90s.
Rastah
Rastah is a Pakistani brand who makes streetwear. The essential piece of any Rastah look is their detailed, intricate fabrics paired with western styles. A lot of patchwork is involved.
Amesh
Amesh, a Sri Lankan label, makes colorful sets made with knits and deadstock fabric. Their clothing is expressive and gender-neutral, without being boring.
Bloni
Bloni believes in amalgamating traditional crafts with technology of the future. Sustainability is a huge part of their designs. Everything they make seems straight out of a sci-fi movie.
That's it for today! I hope you liked this week's post. It's a little on the shorter side, but maybe you learned a new brand today. When people say "Asian", people only think about K-pop, anime, and generally east-Asian culture. Never South, Central, West, or Southeast people. I wanted to showcase Indian, Sri Lankan, and Pakistani designers to show that we exist in the industry, too. All of these designers use their heritage to bring something new to the table, using traditional styles, handcrafted techniques, and sustainability. Comment, like, and subscribe to show your support. Love you guys and see you next week for a MET GALA post!!!
