Hello and welcome back to The Extravagant! In honor of my friend's birthday, when we usually binge watch the entire new season of The Baby-Sitter's Club, I'm going to be assigning each main character a fashion persona. If you don't know, BSC is a show available on Netflix with two seasons (it got canceled). It's an adaptation of the original novels and the more recent graphic novels. It follows five girls in the fictional town Stoneybrook in Connecticut as they manage their babysitting business.
And you may be wondering, what are the fashion personas? In Jackie Walker's books, she proposes the idea that there are six fashion personas. As a huge fan of her books, I took her ideas and reformed them for a new generation. In my version, there are four personas: Classic, Natural, Romantic, and Dramatic which can all have varying degrees of trend-loving. In this post, you'll learn about the four personas. It also kind of turned into a design review unintentionally.
Kristy - Natural
Kristy Thomas is the definition of a Natural. She cares the least about fashion and clothes, and is more into sports. She's usually wearing turtlenecks and sweatshirts, polos, big sweaters, cardigans, and tee shirts, always paired with jeans.
When she dresses up, like for her mom's wedding, she chose a simple blue prom dress. The clean lines, soft color, and the straps that gave an athletic feel is a perfect example of a Natural is a formal setting. She is also seen wearing a blazer and sweater vest, good for a low-key situation.
Claudia - Dramatic
Claudia Kishi is a Dramatic. She's the most artistic and creative one of the group, and uses clothes as a way to express herself. Her bubbly and cheerful personality leads to a lot of yellow and pink, but she has worn green, blue, orange, and rainbows. Other common elements in her style are hair accessories, puff sleeves, pattern clashing, big earrings, collar details, and bomber jackets. Her outfits aren't really trendy now, but you have to remember this show was released in 2020. The outfits are 90s inspired, like fashion when it was released.
It was nice to see the only Asian main character have a fun and expressive style. The only choice I would have made differently is in her hair and accessories. Letting her hair out and adding a colored streak, like in the comics, would have been fun. It would also make her look a bit more mature.
Mary Anne - Classic
Mary Anne Spier was always a Classic. Her style will never go out of style. Her variety of clothing is smaller, and she usually only wears sweaters with a collar peeping out. Geometric designs are also present, like stripes, polka dots, and others that I can't really describe. Her favorite colors seems to be black, red, navy, and cream, all true to a typical Classic. My favorite look has to be what she wore to Kristy's mom's wedding. The full-length navy gown was a sophisticated choice.
Stacey - Classic + Romantic + Dramatic
Stacey is a Classic, like Mary Anne, but also a Romantic and Dramatic. Her color palette consists of black, white, pink, and occasionally red. Her style is nostalgic and fresh all at once. Like Claudia, she wears a lot of puff sleeves. However, Claudia wears it in a fun way, while it makes Stacey look more imposing and in control. She is always put-together but effortless and chic. Some staples in her closet are moto jackets, sheer blouses, polka dots, and berets. It's too trendy for a hardcore Classic like Mary Anne.
Her two formal dresses in the show were amazing. She wore a black and white 50s style dress for the wedding, and it was actually created by sewing up two separate dresses! The dress she wore when she had to make her speech was the dress version of a power suit. She's really living the dream.
Dawn - Natural
Doing a complete 180, we have Dawn. She mostly wears boxy tee shirts, hoodies, army jackets, and flannels with denim on the bottom. Her style is slightly different from Kristy's; she's more of that 70s Cali skater girl, while Kristy is a "normie".
Of all the girls, I like Dawn's the least. It looks like they ran out of money getting good stuff for all the other girls and forgot about Dawn. Leaning into her laidback style would've made her a bit more memorable. Baggy clothes, low-rise, funky patterns, all of that. Also, the sun-kissed look on her hair would have been so cool.
Jessi - Natural + Romantic
I only really added Jessi on here to show an example of a Natural and Romantic combination, which is pretty common amongst middle school girls. On a daily basis, she wears cropped sweatshirts, hoodies, joggers, and leggings. She leans towards athleisure, as opposed to the other Naturals. She's a dancer, so it makes sense.
Her Romantic side comes into play when she's in her ballet costumes. She wears leotards, tights, tutus, and a lot of glitter. Making her regular wear like the balletcore aesthetic would have differentiated her style a bit more from the other girls. Tank tops, dainty sweaters, wrap tops, wrap skirts, and legwarmers would have been a great addition to her wardrobe.
That's it for today! Comment down below your favorite BSC character. Mine would have to be Stacey. You might already have an idea about what persona you fall into by these descriptions, but I'll be posting a quiz soon. Make sure to like, subscribe, and spread the word. See you soon!
