Hello and welcome back to The Extravagant! Recently, I picked up Tithe by Holly Black. I loved The Cruel Prince, so maybe I would like this too, I thought. I think I actually like it more than The Folk of Air series. The writing was gripping and TFoA was a wonderful companion. However, my fashion-centered eye caught the fact that there were several amazing outfits in it. Think early-2000s-glam-rock-teen-who's-secretly-a-faerie. Sounds good, right?
Also, a quick word before getting started. I couldn't find any good pictures of Kaye's vinyl purple catsuit, so that was a bummer. It is, hands down, the best look in the book. So just imagine Britney Spears' red jumpsuit, but in electric purple.
I think chapter one's ensemble has to be one of my favorites. You might have seen it already if you follow me on Pinterest. The vibe I went for was Maneskin, but Euphoria-fied. I thought it was funny while reading it that the entire outfit got destroyed. By the end of chapter two, her tights are ripped and bloody, her coat soaked with bourbon, and her top torn to shreds. Not to mention, her makeup was ruined because of the rain.
These two looks were from chapter 3 and 4, when she goes to the mall with Janet and to the diner where she meets Roiben again. They aren't major fashion moments, nowhere near the first chapter, but they're still cute.
This collection is called Janet's random clothes. Janet has a lot of cool clothes and such a different aesthetic than Kaye's, so I wanted to showcase her too. However, she isn't in a lot of chapters and her clothes aren't described as well as Kaye's. So, I created this. These are all items that she's been seen wearing, with the exception of the black jeans.
These two outfits are from chapter 5, when she learns she's a faerie, and chapter 10, when she's being sacrificed. The nightgown I found was so pretty, I was annoyed that I had to cover the detail at the top with this boring sweater. But, her sacrificial dress is perfect for her for three reasons.
It fits the written description of the dress: white, silk, thin, and pretty
It's simple because the fae think she's just any other mortal sacrifice
The elegant cutouts in the dress is the faerie aspect of it
Plus, the fact that it doesn't fit Kaye's aesthetic at all makes it look out of place on her. It's also the only outfit where she doesn't have her boots on.
This look is in chapter 13, the last one, when she glamours on an outfit and goes to find Corny. The red dress is her princess and the frog outfit. The deep red, asymmetric bodice, and flowing skirt gives an example of a formal dress Kaye would like. Her sacrifice dress was beautiful, but just not her style.
The clothes she ends up going for is the one on the left is inspired by the frog in the fairytale. I used a green waistcoat-halter, tailored shorts, fishnets, and her boots that ended up saving her life at the end. I have no idea why Holly Black wanted Kaye in this look for the final showdown, but the only relevant guess I have is it's green.
That's it for today! It was pretty short, but I just wanted a fun little post to get me in the Halloween spirit. Comment down below your thoughts on Tithe. I may do a bit more with the Modern Faerie Tales series in the future, when I read the whole series, but this is it for now. Coming up soon we'll have some fall and Halloween content, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to leave them below. Bye and see you soon!
