Analyzing the fashion of Agatha Harkness in WandaVision

Updated: Nov 26, 2022

It's been a couple weeks since WandaVision's first season ended, but the Internet, including myself, are still not over it. If you don't know, WandaVision is a show part that's of the phase 5 Marvel. Along with WandaVision, there is Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Loki, and many more. Basically, Wanda and Vision find themselves in a strange black-and-white world. They live in peace until strange things start to happen. That's all I can say without spoiling it, so I suggest you watch the show. Today, I'll be analyzing the outfits of Agnes/Agatha Harkness.

Agatha Harkness in the comics

Episode 1:

The first time we see Agnes, she is wearing a black and purple plaid dress. Since the first couple episodes were filmed in black-and-white, they needed to differentiate the characters using pattern instead of color. Agatha is usually wearing plaid in darker colors, while Wanda wears lighter colored florals and stripes. When Agatha is outside the house, you can see her wearing a cape, which Agatha wears in the comics. Also, if you look closely, you can see that she is wearing a brooch depicting three figures. It's not entirely clear who they are, but my guess is that they are either the Fates, Norns, or Graces, figures in Greek and Norse mythology. She wears this brooch in the comics too.

Episode 2:

In episode 2, she wears another plaid dress with a jacket, which makes me believe that we are still in the 50's and 60's.Overall, it still has the same aesthetic of the first episode, taking inspiration from The Dick Van Dyke Show. Her hair is in a flipped bob and teased, somewhat similar to Wanda. Notice that she is wearing her brooch again.

The Dick Van Dyke Show

Episode 3:

Episode 3 is when the overall confusion is skyrocketing. We see that the year and inspiration has changed, resulting in a change of fashion. Agnes wears a brown skirt and a navy top with a collared shirt under it. Notice that she is wearing the symbol on her brooch again, this time in the form of a pendant.

Episode 5

It's clear that we have jumped to the 80's with Agnes' activewear. She has a black striped dress with a blue tie-up top. She also has magenta tights, purple legwarmers, and a sliver and blue headband with her new perm. I've noticed that Wanda most commonly wears red and blue, while Agnes wears darker colors, usually purple. It's an easy way to differentiate the different roles in this alternate reality.

Also, they dress in the colors of their magic. In the Marvel universe,

Agnes wears an ivory mock-neck with pleating details with dark pleated trousers. On top, she has a brown and gold waistcoat with- you guessed it- her witchy brooch. Along with that, she has big gold hoops and her perm. This is very different from her other outfits, which were in brighter with blue and purple hues.

Episode 6

In episode 6, we only see her once. She appears to be in a trance, and when awoken by Vision, laughs manically. However, we now know that she was unaffected by Wanda's mind control and was probably just acting. She is dresses up as a witch, the most obvious clue of all time. She also has blue highlights.

Episode 7

Episode 7 is when it all finally comes together. When she comes to take Billy and Tommy, she wears a dark purple sweater and collared shirt with her hair up. However, when she reveals her identity to Wanda, she is wearing her brooch again. In the first scene, we see a flashback where Agatha, back in 1693, kills the rest of the witches and takes her mother's brooch.

Episode 8 and 9

We finally get to see Agatha's villain costume in episode 8. She is wearing a dress and robes in shades of blue and purple, her signature colors. Her brooch makes an appearance again, hopefully for the last time. The collarbone area of her dress mimics vines or roots, and it was a pretty cool feature of her costume. The most distinctive part of her costume is her makeup. They heavily contoured her face, thickened her eyebrows, and added a smoky eye for the classic evil look.

I hope you liked this post, and leave a like if you want more of these types of posts. I found a somewhat similar video by Mina Le focusing on the wardrobe of Wanda. I would highly recommend you check it out (you can find it here). I'd love to make the Wanda's final outfit for Halloween, but I think it's out of my current skillset. So we'll see about that. Anyways, see you next week!
